It's Trivia Tuesday! Filters #1

Question

Which kind of filter should you use on the patient end?

a) HME (only humidification)
b) HMEF (humidification and filtration)
c) Hydrophobic filter
d) Electrostatic filter membrane

Answer

b) HMEF

During transport, passive humidification with an HMEF (Heat and Moisture Exchanger Filter) is used. To achieve the best moisture output, the HMEF is placed at the patient end near to the patient’s mouth. The filter media in HMEFs works bidirectionally, so both the inspired and expired air is already filtered at the patient end. The filter media in HMEFs can be electrostatic or hydrophobic.
