It is well-established that mechanical ventilation may induce lung injuries caused by excessive stress, strain, or atelectrauma. Two factors that may be used to predict the risk of ventilator-induced lung injury are driving pressure and mechanical power. Mechanical power is made up of several ventilator-generated factors including tidal volume, pressure, flow, and respiratory rate, and represents the energy load transferred from the ventilator to the respiratory system. In the video available below, we look at the first study to investigate the driving pressure and mechanical power delivered by the intelligent ventilation mode, INTELLiVENT-ASV, to assess whether they pose a risk of VILI, or can be considered as lung-protective.
